Trees and Shrubs Online, the International Dendrology Society's digital encyclopedia of cultivated temperate woody plants, has announced the publication of its updated treatment of the cultivated oak species in Quercus Section Lobatae. The account covers more than 100 species and some 80 varieties or cultivars, making it by far the most comprehensive treatment of these important trees ever published. This update—both a major revision of the taxa previously covered in W. J. Bean’s Trees and Shrubs Hardy in the British Isles and an expansion to include many oaks only recently introduced to cultivation—has been prepared by IOS members Allen Coombes and Roderick Cameron. The authors have already completed the treatments of Sections Cerris, Ilex, and Cyclobalanopsis. In total, they have now published more than 294,000 words on oaks, and they are still not quite two‑thirds of the way through the genus.
